Top Dog Breeds of 2011


Bigger is Better!

After compiling all of the registrations across America, the American Kennel Club (AKC) has determined the top dog breeds of the year. Without further ado, here are the top 10 most popular dog breeds for 2011.






1. Labrador Retriever
    - The Labrador Retriever has held the top spot for the past 21 years!
2. German Shepard Dog
3. Beagle
4. Golden Retriever
5. Yorkshire Terrier
6. Bulldog
7. Boxer
8. Poodle
9. Dachshund
10. Rottweiler


Trends are toward larger dogs, with Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Boxers and Rottweilers coming in within the Top Ten.

Labrador Retrievers continue to hold the top spot, while Rottweilers have pushed ahead to push Shih Tzus out of the top ten. Larger Breeds continue to rise in popularity with notable increases from the following breeds:

- Bernese Mountain Dogs (moving from 54 to 34)
- Belgian Malinois (moving from 94 to 74)

Both Bernese Mountain Dogs and the Belgian Malinois made a whopping 20 spot jump!

- Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs (moving from 101 to 82)
- Bullmastifs (moving from 49 to 40)
- Rhodesian Ridgebacks (moving from 57 to 44)
